One of my passions is saltwater reef tanks. I have a 65gl reef tank with 16 corals and a number of fish. My girlfriend has always wanted a Peacock Mantis shrimp, but I was hesitant to get one because the only info I had on them was that they need to be kept in their own tank because they kill everything. Finally on her birthday, I bought her a separate tank and the Mantis Shrimp. This thing is by far, the most amazing creature I have ever seen. Upon researching the animal, I discovered that it has the best eyesight of any animal on the planet (even better than an eagle). It has tri-nocular vision and can see 9 primary colors, and in infa-red. It is also, pound for pound, the one of the strongest animals on the planet. It's hammers, which it uses to punch it's prey, approach speeds of a .22 caliber bullet. They are known as "thumb splitters" in the diving world because they are know to break a diver's finger right down to the bone. It is also extremely intelligent (it's closest relative in the ocean is an octopus) and lives for 20 years reaching a foot long.
Here are a few videos of my Peacock Mantis Shrimp, Leonidas, unleashing on some Emerald Crabs that we feed him. Enjoy
