    Urgent Help needed :(

Post  Veago on Wed Mar 11, 2009 3:28 pm

The other day my playstation went really slow, started to jerk and crashed...then the red standby light flashed and once pressing the on button returns the flashing light to just staying red (standby) then once i press the red button again it turns on, slows down and crashes and then turns off and repeats the flahsing red light.

after reading the manual it says that if this occurs then the system has overheated, however after i left the system off all night then tried to go on it again it repeated the problem, after phoning Sony they said that i'd have to send in my styem and they would basicaly make everything inside pretty much new with a new freash HDD.....problem is im not too bothered about getting my system repaired, it's the DATA i need, it has years of saves, all my music ect.. on it, now i know my trophies are fine a their saved on the server and can be gained back by re-entering my details on the new HDD...

after taking it into a repairs shop they have said that its issue is not it is keep overheating but that it has already overheated too much (no idea how it's well ventilated and i take great care, unless dust may have clogged the fan from working) that the solder has melted onto the chip and causes problems...

Sony claim that because i have to send the original HDD in with the system i wont be able to retrieve my data it'll have to be wiped because each HDD is assigned to it's PS3 (which is why you have to re-format a HDD when putting it into a different PS3)...

i dont want my years of data to go, the worst thing is none of it is backed up but i was going to back it all up that say on my 500GB external...

what im asking you guys is, IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN GET MY DATA OFF THE PS3'S HDD WITHOUT IT HAVING TO BE BACKED UP FROM THE PS3......

i have heard talk that placing the HDD into a usb external HDD device that enables it to go into a PC with the software of a ps3 emulator, will enable the pc to read the ps3 data on my HDD.

im soo worried that i'll end up losing all my stuff! (which is prob why they're tons of spelling errors and bad grammar ect, cos im typing fast and panic-like)

please help, i'll make it clear now what i need

    *deep breath*

Because my PS3 wont stay on longer enough to copy data from my ps3 to my external
I need some OTHER way to copy the data without my ps3 having to be turned on.

(i have tried using my brother ps3 but i need to reformat the HDD it says when i put it in his ps3)

help will be MUCH!!! appreciated, thank you for reading it all and being so patient with me, thanks.

If it will absolutely not turn on you could take the HDD out connect it to a PC with a SATA connector and power cable turn the PC off first. Turn it on and try to retrieve the files that way, but a word of advice I do not know if this works on a Windows OS as I had to do this on a Linux box myself when my fan died.

Sorry for your loss and I hope this helps

cheers for the advice i was thinking about this myself as i have the connecter, however i was lead to belive that putting it into a Pc, it'd have to be reformatted so that the PC could read it, i have linux on my laptop and i know that laptop HDD are basicly the same as ps3 ones...

This is why I didn't think a windows box was up to the job. I have no side panel on my rig so when my fan died I plugged my PS3 drive into the mother board directly and booted linux and fedora recognized it as a regular old drive. I went to the file system and copied what I thought was relevant. You may be able to put it in the laptop and get a linux distro you can boot from a USB key and with a little luck copy the files from the drive over to the USB key distro then take the USB key plug it into the linux distro on the laptop copy the files wipe the USB key of the linux distro recopy the files to it get the new PS3 back from Sony put the files back after setting up the ps3 and not lose anything. This would be complicated for an average computer user I realize and I am not aware of your level of comfortability with this process but it is a possibility depending on the size of USB key you can get a hold of and the amount of stuff on your PS3 drive. Remember you only need the music pics and saves the game data and the downloaded games can all be redownloaded and reinstalled for free

hmm sounds promissing, i'll deffo have to try this out if what im trying at the moment fails (removing the melted solder and re soldering it), that way saves me £140 to send it off to sony, space on my external isnt a problem it's 500GB, i know quite a bit bout computers but there is stil lalot for me to learn, for example

    what's Fedora

"plugged my PS3 drive into the mother board directly and booted linux" <- so if i put my ps3 HDD into my laptop, i wont need to reformat it? it should just read it as it is, my question about this is, once it reads the ps3 data and i copy it onto my external, wouldnt it of like translated it from ps3 to pc data, so that the ps3 cant just restore it all cos it cant read it as ps3 ???? im not sure i could be way off there though.

If you boot from a USB drive into linux you should not have to reformat. My distro read the drive as is.

Unfortunately I did not copy my whole drive I copied the save data and pictures I had on it. And no it was like moving the file to a USB key and then putting it on a PC. If you could get the PS3 to run then you could put a USB key in go to your saves and click triangle and hit copy and it would be like the same thing. You just take the files from the external when the refurbed PS3 comes in and put them back on to the PS3 HDD

EDIT: Funny how I didn't mean for the thread to turn red white and blue..... Lame.

ok thanks you help so far has been ALOT more help then most of the Sh*t i've been searching through, well unfortunatly atm my ps3 wont turn on, otherwise copying wouldnt be a problem, however i only really need the music and save data, which you say you've already copied and i assume it worked, this is great news so far

i have a USB drive (by USB Drive i mean i have this USB square i plug my ps3 HDD into then plug the USB into laptop/pc)

ok just so i know if im understanding this right......

If i was to put my ps3 HDD into my USB drive, then into my linux laptop (which should read the data), i wouldnt need to format the drive, then i insert my external HDD, copy from ps3 drive, to external hdd, then once ps3 working....external plugs in, then go on restore, choose external and wallah, i have all my years of saved games and music ect.. ?? Very Happy

the B*stard thing is the day my ps3 broke is the day i was gonna back everything up lol

I don't know if this is true or not but I've seen people mention on the Lithium forums that when you send your system in for repairs, you don't even need to send in your HDD at all. Take it out and pop it in the repaired/replaced system when you get it.

lol i have actually heard the opposite. that you have to send it in with the original one, even if you upgraded it since they often send you a refurb. Thus they need your HDD

this is sadly true, when i phoned sony said said the system was to be sent in with the original HDD.

" Take it out and pop it in the repaired/replaced system when you get it."
thanks for you advice CrashMurphy however i already thought of that option.. unfortunatly when you place your HDD in another ps3 you need to re-format the HDD, and if i sent my ps3 off but kept the HDD anyway, once they send me the fixed/ new console i'd need to re-format the HDD still as it'd basicaly be a different console, it sucks lol.
