For some time now I have been working on a project that's dear to my heart. I am looking to do a quick little experiment and get some reactions that I hope will help further along my work. I am going to give you a situation, and I would like for you to step into it for a minute, and consider it's impact. What I am looking for are responses as if you just learned this as fact. It's all hypothetical of course, but the intent is to treat this as an actual revelation. You don't have to participate if this is not your cup of tea, but for those who do, this an opportunity to stretch that good ol' imagination engine. BTW, I am not going to respond, I don't want to influence any results I may get, if any.

    Anyhow...here goes.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is based on a true story, only it hasn't occurred yet...(LOL)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's morning, and as you do every morning, you head on outside to get your morning newspaper. You stop at your front door to enjoy a stretch. "Oh that's good" you say in a yawn, arms stretched outward, paused, holding on to that feeling for just that much longer.

Shuffling down the path to your driveway in your robe, a lone jay's opus seems to be heralding the new day. Bird on a wire.

You spot your newspaper. Same spot every time, damn that paperboy is good. Bagged to prevent moisture, even a rubber band to add insurance.

Your thoughts take hold. "Now that's the extra mile I'm talking 'bout, that boy deserves a tip. I'll try to remember next time."

You head back inside for some morning coffee, and a quick scan of the newspaper.
Taking a seat at the dining table, you unfold the newspaper, and there, in huge bold, black print, you see the headline. Life Detected In Milky Way, Found To Be Abundant.

Reading further, you learn that living worlds have been detected around a number of stars within the Milky Way galaxy. Water oceans, oxygen atmospheres, and lush vegetation readings indicate their existence...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll stop there. The rest is up to you, if you choose to consider this and respond. You don't have to step into character or anything, I am just looking for thoughts that could perhaps cross your mind regarding the hypothetical news headline.

My hat's off to anyone who can get this done. Much appreciated.

What kind of life are we talking about here? Plant life? Sentient humanoid life?

I should have elaborated the news story further.

The story is about the detection of living worlds within our own galaxy. These worlds, detected by spectrum analysis and shown in numerical results, are not visible by any means. They are data on a page. They have not been seen. Only detected. As to what living forms may be on these living worlds, that can only be left to speculation and theory. However, intense vegetation readings show that actual photosynthesis processes are at work at a number of identified extrasolar planets. Basically, living worlds.

Honestly, I'd be ecstatic. Being a scientist myself, new amazing breakthroughs and information is fantastic. Though at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised in the least. Within the whole infinite span of the universe, the odds are in favor of other chemical, planetary, cosmic, and other reactions creating sustainable life. Yet one thing to keep in mind is that how this other life is sustained might be vastly different from how life on Earth is sustained; there's no definitive cookbook stating that Earth's way of doing things is the only way to keep life going.

Thanks for the honest reply. I wonder, you being scientifically inclined, if you might lend your thoughts to a question. Earlier I mentioned spectrum analysis as being the method used for detection. Now I am not sure how valid linking spectrum analysis to this sort of discovery might be. You see, I am working on a science fiction novel, and one of the most important things I need to address in this story, which is set in the near future, is it's scientific validity in relation to our current direction of scientific inquiry. So basically, I would like to ask your opinion on this, could spectral analysis be a believable explanation as to how these living worlds were detected? If not, it would throw the entire story off kilter, and I'd have to come up with another solution.
