    Yay Vista... Empty Yay Vista...

Post  BitRunner Tue Mar 10, 2009 7:30 pm

My laptop is now in an infinite blue screen of death loop on boot after some driver probs in Vista ("not enough storage to process this command" when Vista would try to find any USB devices (Wacom tablet, iPod, etc) even though I have 100+ GB free, page swap is managed by Windows, I have 4GB ram, no spyware, etc, and then I scheduled a chkdsk for reboot, upon rebooting I was hosed and same results on safe mode, thanks Vista!).

So, I'm down and out for likely a few days with browser access only from my PS3 or this sh*tty Windows Mobile XV6700 celphone until I can get this drama resolved (I'll still be at the meeting just not these forums as much). Wish me luck.

Can you boot to a cd and reinstall or repair Windows? Or does it even let you get that far?

I was never a fan of Vista... and I hope you resolve this issue.

Get a linux distro and run like hell from vista, then go to a site like tigerdirect and buy an xp disc for 100 bucks and dual boot so you have a good operating system and you have an OS that can play games. God I hate Microsoft sometimes.

Yay Vista... VistaFail <---A pic I made for Fark a bit ago.

When I get back to school, I'm thinking of installing Fedora Core or some other Linux OS onto my laptop, while keeping Windows XP on my desktop. I've used Fedora before, and I really like it; it's definitely worth a shot. You can even boot the OS from a disk if you want to just try it at first.

Fedora is great and if you are going to use a vpn stay with Fedora Core 4 but if you don't need a vpn I would go with the latest Fedora. The only issue is finding drivers for stuff

Fedora Core 4 was the one I used for a while; I might try FC 10 just to see what it's like.

Well, I think I got it finally figured out. I had a copy of Norton Ghost 12 laying around so I booted with that and backed up all my app zips/isos and my docs to USB (I really need a good automated backup system) and chkdsk'd the drive (no bad sectors thank you Jesus!).

I searched through my hundreds of CDs/DVDs in my apartment for hours last night looking for the Vaio Recovery disc... except there wasn't one b/c Sony has YOU make them now. Apparently though F10 on the BIOS will get you booting from the Recovery partition (as long as the HDD is first in the BIOS Boot Order I found). So now it's restoring back finally. I'd love to get Vista off this machine and go back to XP but I'm worried about not being able to get drivers for my BluRay/HDMI Out/Wifi (same reason I haven't put Fedora on here either other than the lack of 3dsMax/Photoshop/Zbrush/etc).
